Less than two months before take off! Here is a little summary of the preparations we've already made for the trip.
Browsing the Lonely Planet's complete guide book for Thailand has been a good way of getting excited about the trip we are about to take on. So far we have concentrated more on the pictures, maps and the general information than on the different locations. We are trying to get the bigger picture first and then look at the details when finally in Thailand.
Seeing and chatting with Natti is the best way of getting excited about the trip, most definitely. Because of her open and warm personality, her hospitality and her amazing cookings we cannot wait to visit her homeland and to meet other Thais. (I do not know if anybody can compete with Natti though..) Åke and Natti have been very helpful with making travel plans, also Mara.
This week we have filled in the visa-forms as we will apply for the tourist visa. We will be traveling for 43 days and the visa will allow us to stay in Thailand for the whole time if we feel like it. We might visit Laos, Cambodia or Malaysia (or all of them) too, but if we are enjoying ourselves in Thailand we probably will stay there for the whole 6 weeks. But we will see.
However, the fact is that we arrive in Bangkok December 2nd and the plan is to stay there for 4-5 days. Natti's friend Noom will be our local guide in Bangkok and he might take us on an over night's trip to a city nearby during the first weekend. After Bangkok we will head to the beaches. That is all we know right now. I am sure everything will fall in their places as we go.
The biggest question at the moment is whether we should take some vaccinations or not. I guess we will ask Åke and Martti for their opinion because they have been in Thailand for longer periods as well.
We have also planned to have little christmas parties with our families and friends before we go. Call that a travel preparation as well if you may. :)
